The University of Auckland has specialised in training and research in the exploration, development, and management of geothermal resources for thirty years. From 1978 to 2005, this centre of excellence in geothermal science and technology was based in the Geothermal Institute. Now with the formation of a more broadly-based earth science and engineering group, some of the activities of the old Geothermal Institute and some new geothermal research and training initiatives have been set up as the Geothermal Program within IESE.
The Geothermal Program includes research and consulting activities in geothermal geology, geothermal geophysics, and geothermal engineering.
If you are considering a career in geothermal energy or need upskilling in geothermal science and engineering, there is a range of training options offered within the Geothermal Program that may be of interest. A one-semester Postgraduate Certificate in Geothermal Energy Technology (PGCertGeothermTech) runs each year from mid-July through to the end of October. In addition, a range of introductory and specialist Geothermal Short-Courses are offered.
The Geothermal Program hosts the New Zealand Geothermal Workshop in mid-November each year.
